URGENT UPDATE: The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Education just announced critical updates during their meeting on October 9, 2025, focusing on immediate enhancements in student learning, safety, and sustainability initiatives.
In a decisive move to advance educational standards, the Board approved the 2025–26 Certification of Standards-Aligned Instructional Materials. This ensures that every student has access to the latest, high-quality textbooks and resources, vital for enhancing educational outcomes.
Student Achievement in Focus
Principals Hether Hart of Meyers Elementary and Justin Zunino of South Tahoe High School presented their School Plans for Student Achievement. They emphasized goals surrounding curriculum improvement, robust student support, and essential professional development for educators. Dr. Alan Reeder revealed crucial data from the fall i-Ready assessment for grades K-8, which will inform instructional strategies aimed at meeting grade-level benchmarks by spring.
Enhanced Safety Measures
The Board also reviewed significant updates to the School Site Safety Plans for the 2025–26 academic year. These plans now incorporate tailored disaster adaptations for students with disabilities and enhanced opioid prevention strategies for students in grades 7-12. Additionally, emergency response plans for potential violent incidents have been updated, ensuring a safer learning environment. Barton Health representatives presented “Stop the Bleed” kits for each school site, reinforcing campus readiness for emergencies.
Sustainability Initiatives Gain Traction
In a groundbreaking presentation by energy services firm Veregy, the Board explored ambitious projects aimed at fulfilling LTUSD’s commitment to energy efficiency and carbon neutrality. Proposed districtwide upgrades in solar energy, lighting, and heating systems could yield an estimated $996,200 in annual energy savings, supported by federal incentives. The Board is set to vote on this pivotal proposal on October 23, 2025.
Operational Improvements and Future Plans
Chief Business Officer Kelly Buttery announced that LTUSD will enhance its records retention procedures to align with California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO) guidelines, aiming to boost efficiency and cut costs. Public Information Officer Teresa Schow revealed plans for a new LTUSD website, expected to launch by March 2026, enhancing communication and outreach to the community.
Celebrating Community Success
The Board celebrated the success of the 2025 Fund Our Future campaign, which achieved over 90% completion of Family Income Survey forms. This accomplishment could secure an additional $500,000 in funding for LTUSD schools, showcasing the collaborative efforts across the district.
Community Engagement Highlights
Board members reflected on recent community activities, including the Homecoming Parade and a Community Conversation on Bike Safety, reinforcing LTUSD’s strong ties with local partners. Student Board Member Arya Saini shared highlights from the football team’s homecoming victory and noted that she and fellow Student Board Member Miri Lucksinger will present at the upcoming California School Boards Association Annual Education Conference in Sacramento this December.
