UPDATE: The dream season for the Marin Catholic Wildcats came to a heartbreaking end last night as they were eliminated from the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships. The Wildcats, ranked No. 8, faced a formidable No. 9 King’s Academy team from Sunnyvale and fell 85-73 in Kentfield.
In a game that showcased the intensity of high school basketball, Marin Catholic’s first-year coach, Kevin Vasquez, emphasized that the team should take pride in their remarkable journey despite the loss. “What an incredible season,” he stated. “I told the team, don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”
The Wildcats, who finished the season with a record of 24-5, were not predicted to win their league, yet they claimed the MCAL title and progressed to the North Coast Section open division playoffs before entering the NorCal D-I playoffs.
Senior captain Joe Hammond reflected on the game, acknowledging the skill level of their opponents. “We were confident coming into this game,” he said. “But they were a very, very skilled team. They were definitely the most skilled team we played all season.”
King’s Academy, the defending Division-III NorCal champions, displayed exceptional talent, with Adrian Barnett leading the charge by scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The Knights took control as the game progressed, showcasing their playoff experience and resilience.
Marin Catholic initially took the lead at halftime, 40-37, thanks to hot shooting from Oliver Myers, who scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half. “I think we took them by surprise a little bit,” Hammond commented. “Maybe they figured they were playing some soft Marin team and they could just take it easy.”
However, the momentum shifted in the second half. The Wildcats led briefly in the third quarter, but King’s Academy quickly regained the advantage, with Barnett’s powerful dunk igniting their offense. The Wildcats managed to tie the score at 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, but the Knights’ relentless rebounding and fastbreak execution proved too much.
“We lost to a very good team without a doubt,” Vasquez stated. “But we were ahead at halftime and then we couldn’t get a stop or make a shot.”
Other standout performances for Marin Catholic included senior Micah Pierce, who added 10 points and six rebounds, while teammates Chase Williams, Jack Herman, and Bentley Morrow contributed vital points. Despite the loss, the emotional toll was evident as players exited the court.
“There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room,” Vasquez noted. “But when they are able to look back on the season without emotion, they are going to realize what they accomplished. The experience we got this season is going to pay dividends for years to come.”
As the Wildcats process this tough defeat, their season stands as a testament to resilience and determination, leaving fans and players alike with memories of a truly remarkable journey.
