Marine Veteran Launches Urgent Fundraising Campaign for Fellow Heroes

UPDATE: A Marine veteran who lost his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan is urgently raising funds to support fellow veterans through the Semper Fi & America’s Fund. Gabe Martinez, who was gravely injured 15 years ago on Thanksgiving Day, is calling on the community to contribute to an organization that has profoundly impacted his life.

Martinez, who was just 48 days into his deployment when tragedy struck on November 25, 2010, experienced a devastating blast from an improvised explosive device. “As I’m acknowledging my buddy’s warning about the disturbed earth, I stood up and boom, a second IED detonated beneath me,” he recalled, emphasizing the chaos and horror of that fateful moment.

The Fund has been instrumental in supporting around 38,000 service members and veterans over the last two decades, providing more than $500 million in grants, support, and services. Martinez shared how The Fund was already helping him before he even realized it, facilitating his family’s journey to his bedside in Bethesda, Maryland, following his return from combat.

“Every aspect of my recovery was supported by The Fund,” Martinez stated. “They provided mental health support, specialized equipment, and even financial assistance when I was pursuing a career in digital forensics for federal law enforcement.”

Martinez’s heartfelt message extends to other veterans, particularly during the holiday season. “The holiday season could be the most wonderful time of the year, but for some, it could be the toughest,” he said, stressing the importance of knowing that resources like the Semper Fi & America’s Fund are available. “If you are struggling, there are people who care.”

Martinez’s case manager, Cartmill, expressed her admiration for him, stating, “He is not just part of The Fund family; he is part of my family, and he will be forever!” This sentiment underscores the deep connections forged through the support of this organization.

As the holiday season approaches, Martinez urges the public to contribute to the fundraising campaign, ensuring that fellow veterans receive the help they need. “Every dollar counts,” he emphasized, highlighting the critical support that The Fund provides to veterans and their families during difficult times.
