UPDATE: Massachusetts taxpayers are receiving urgent rebates starting today, with amounts reaching up to $7,000 for some residents. Governor Charlie Baker’s administration has activated a 2023 law that caps state revenues, leading to automatic payments for approximately 3 million taxpayers.
The rebates will be disbursed on a rolling basis between now and December 15. Eligible individuals who filed their 2021 tax returns can expect these payments, with around 500,000 payments going out this week alone. Following this, approximately 1 million payments will be processed each subsequent week.
For those receiving refunds via direct deposit, check your bank account for a transaction labeled “MASTTAXRFD.” If you typically receive checks, these will be mailed directly to your address. There is no upper limit on the rebate amounts, meaning wealthier individuals will receive larger payouts. For example, a taxpayer earning $35,000 may see around $200, while those with incomes exceeding $1 million could obtain rebates of $7,000 or more.
If you have yet to file your 2021 tax return, there is still time. Submissions must be completed by September 15, 2023, to qualify for a refund, which will typically arrive about a month after filing.
In addition to financial news, Massachusetts is implementing a new statewide ban on discarding mattresses and textiles, including clothing and shoes, effective today. Officials indicated that they are unlikely to penalize individual violators but will offer guidance on proper disposal methods.
On another front, investigators have confirmed the identity of the “Lady of the Dune,” a long-unidentified murder victim found in Provincetown nearly fifty years ago. The victim, identified as Ruth Marie Terry, was only 37 years old when she was killed. Officials are hopeful that this revelation will lead to new insights into her unsolved murder case.
The deadline to submit ballots for next week’s elections is at 5 p.m. today. Voters who have not yet cast their votes are advised to drop off their ballots in person to ensure they are counted in time.
