Mikie Sherrill’s Inauguration Moves to Newark, Breaking 235-Year Tradition

UPDATE: In a historic shift, Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has announced that her inauguration on January 20, 2024, will take place at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, breaking a 235-year tradition of holding such ceremonies in Trenton. This unprecedented move marks a significant moment in New Jersey’s political history.

Sherrill’s decision, revealed in a statement on Thursday, highlights her commitment to the community she calls home. “I couldn’t be more honored to be sworn in as your next governor and begin my administration in the Gateway City,” she stated. This inauguration will also see newly elected Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell take the oath of office alongside her.

The choice of NJPAC, with a capacity of 2,800 seats, surpasses that of the traditional venue, the Patriots Theater at Trenton’s War Memorial, which has hosted inaugurations since 1932. This move is particularly symbolic as it reflects Sherrill’s dedication to engaging with diverse communities across New Jersey.

Sherrill emphasized her focus on delivering for all New Jerseyans: “For more than a year, I’ve been on a mission to deliver lower costs, a better future for our kids, and a more transparent and accountable state government,” she said. Her approach to leadership is rooted in listening to the needs of the people.

This inauguration is particularly noteworthy, as it marks the first time a first-term gubernatorial inauguration will be held outside of Trenton since 1790, when William Livingston took the oath in Princeton.

Newark leaders have expressed excitement over the event. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. stated, “It is such an honor that Gov-Elect Mikie Sherrill has chosen to be sworn into office in her home county of Essex.” He noted that NJPAC is a prime venue to showcase the city’s cultural vibrancy and diversity.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka added, “As New Jersey’s largest city, Newark is an appropriate setting for such a momentous occasion, bringing to bear its history of immigration, diversity, and shared democratic values.” The mayor emphasized that Newark is proud to host this significant event and looks forward to the positive changes Sherrill’s governance will bring.

Sherrill, who resides in Montclair with her husband, Jason Hedberg, and their four children, will celebrate her 54th birthday just a day prior to the inauguration.

As excitement builds for this groundbreaking ceremony, it’s clear that Sherrill’s administration promises to prioritize community engagement and responsiveness. Observers are eager to see how the new governor plans to address pressing issues facing New Jersey.
