BREAKING NEWS: Mount Vernon Outland Airport has been officially selected as the Terminus host site for the 2026 Air Race Classic, a prestigious all-female piloted cross-country air race. This major announcement came just hours ago, marking a significant milestone for local tourism and community engagement.
The event will take place from June 25 to June 29, 2026, attracting pilots, crews, and aviation enthusiasts from across the nation. This is set to be the largest aviation event at Mount Vernon since the 1973 Blue Angels air show, according to an official news release.
“This honor puts Mount Vernon Outland Airport on a national stage,” said Airport Manager Chris Collins. “We are excited to showcase our facilities and staff during an event of this scale.”
The Air Race Classic traces its roots back to the 1929 Women’s Air Derby, challenging female pilots to navigate a multi-day route across the United States. Unlike typical races focused on speed, this competition emphasizes accuracy, flight planning, and consistency. The race culminates in a celebratory welcome in the designated Terminus City, now confirmed to be Mount Vernon.
Local officials, including Host City Terminus Chair Sheila Jolly-Scrivner, expressed enthusiasm for the event’s potential impact on the community. “This is truly a community-wide opportunity,” she stated. “From aviation enthusiasts to families, the Air Race Classic offers something for everyone, showcasing Mount Vernon’s hospitality and support for women in aviation.”
Racers and officials are expected to arrive on Thursday, June 25, with a series of community events planned throughout their stay. A public aviation celebration and youth activity day will occur on Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the airport. Activities will include Young Eagle Flights for children, interactive aviation displays, and educational opportunities aimed at inspiring the next generation of pilots.
“This event will have a significant positive impact on tourism and the local economy,” stated Angela Schrum, Mount Vernon Tourism Director. “We look forward to welcoming racers and visitors from across the country while highlighting everything Mount Vernon has to offer.”
Event organizers are currently seeking local, regional, and national sponsors to support the Air Race Classic and its related activities. Sponsorship opportunities promise high visibility and community engagement, all while aligning businesses with a respected aviation event that promotes education and opportunities for female pilots.
As planning continues, additional details, schedules, and sponsorship information will be released, making this a must-watch event for the aviation community and local residents alike.
