BREAKING: Mountain View has surged into the District 2 Class 2A girls basketball final after a thrilling 50-44 victory over Holy Cross in a semifinal showdown last night at J. William McLaughlin Gymnasium. The Lady Eagles, now 18-6, will face top-seeded Wyoming Seminary on February 27 at 4 p.m., following a strong second-half performance.
Holy Cross built an early nine-point lead, thanks to their explosive three-point shooting, prompting Mountain View coach Corey Gesford to call for a timeout. His message was clear: “Relax. We’ve been here before.” The Lady Eagles responded with resilience, holding the upset-minded Lady Crusaders to just eight points in the final 14 minutes of play.
“It was deep-breath time,” Gesford said. “We just had to buckle down and do what we talked about, which was to not let their shooter catch and shoot.” The tactical adjustments worked perfectly as Mountain View tightened their defense and began a comeback.
Leading the charge, Addison Kilmer delivered a standout performance with 25 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals. Her efforts were complemented by Emily Trichilo, who added 11 points. Holy Cross’s Aniya Osgood led her team with 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Holy Cross entered halftime with a slim 25-23 lead, but the momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter. After a quick burst from Osgood and her teammates, Holy Cross extended their lead to 36-27 with just over six minutes left in the quarter.
However, Mountain View flipped the script, launching a decisive 12-0 run to take control of the game. With clutch plays from Kilmer and Trichilo, the Lady Eagles tied the game at 36 and took the lead shortly after.
“We just needed to pick up the intensity and lock in,” Trichilo said, reflecting on the pivotal moments that changed the game. “We got the right mindset and took it from there.” As Mountain View surged ahead, they maintained their lead through a tense fourth quarter.
Despite late-game efforts from Holy Cross, including a drive and free throws from Mollie Urban to bring the score to 48-44, Mountain View sealed their victory with two free throws from Aubrey Sanders with just 10.4 seconds remaining.
Coach Lindsay Howard of Holy Cross praised her team’s effort, stating, “Mountain View is a battle-tested team. They created the plays in crucial moments.” The Lady Crusaders, who finished the season at 13-11, showed great potential and resilience.
Looking ahead, Mountain View’s matchup with Wyoming Seminary promises to be an exciting rematch of last year’s semifinal, which the Lady Eagles won in overtime. With a PIAA Class 2A playoff berth secured, Mountain View is eager to continue their championship pursuit.
“We’ve worked so hard all season,” Kilmer emphasized. “Our first goal was league champs, and now we’re in the hunt for the district championship. It means a lot.”
As fans gear up for the final at Mohegan Arena, the anticipation builds. Mountain View’s tenacity and commitment to their defensive game plan will be crucial as they prepare for a formidable opponent in Wyoming Seminary.
