Nathan Richardson Brings Frederick Douglass to Life in Hampton

UPDATE: Nathan Richardson, a dedicated historical interpreter, will present his acclaimed workshop, “The Art of Historical Interpretation,” next week in Hampton Roads. The event takes place at the Hampton History Museum on Monday at 6:30 p.m., offering attendees a unique opportunity to learn how to embody historical figures like Frederick Douglass.

Richardson, who performs about 65 shows annually across the United States, transforms into Douglass, the renowned American abolitionist, in full 19th-century attire. He engages audiences with not only scripted speeches but also interactive Q&A sessions, where he answers questions as Douglass himself. This engaging format allows audiences to connect deeply with history, making it more relatable and impactful.

“An interpreter literally has to become that person,” Richardson said, emphasizing the difference between his role and that of a reenactor. His performances start with historical scenes but culminate in direct audience interaction, where he responds to questions about Douglass’s life, struggles, and achievements.

Richardson, a 22-year Army veteran, became a historical interpreter in 2012 and has since dedicated his career to reviving the legacy of Douglass. He believes Douglass’s story is crucial in understanding the foundations of civil rights in America. The workshop aims to inspire others to pursue careers in historical interpretation and keep these vital stories alive.

“Over the past decade, I’ve noticed a decline in people entering this field,” Richardson noted. “We need younger individuals who are passionate about history to step up and bring it to life.”

The workshop is free for museum members and costs $5 for nonmembers. This opportunity not only honors Douglass’s legacy but also encourages a new generation to engage with history.
