Oklahoma City Thunder’s Nikola Topic Begins Urgent Chemotherapy

UPDATE: Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic, just 20 years old, has begun urgent chemotherapy following a confirmed diagnosis of testicular cancer. The Thunder’s general manager, Sam Presti, announced the news earlier today, October 30, 2023, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Presti revealed that Topic wanted to keep the diagnosis private until he started treatment. “He’s been in here, he’s training, he’s working out through this entire process,” Presti said. “This would be a challenging treatment process to go through.” Topic’s health is currently the team’s top priority as he navigates this difficult journey.

Originally selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Topic was sidelined for the entire 2024-25 season due to a torn ACL. Earlier this month, the Thunder announced he would miss at least four to six weeks after undergoing a “testicular procedure,” which was later confirmed to be a biopsy that diagnosed the cancer.

As of now, there is no timeline for Topic’s return to the NBA. However, Presti remains optimistic, stating that Topic’s doctors are “extremely positive” about his long-term outlook. “This is his most important priority,” he stressed. “He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any time length or expectations on that.”

Topic has the full support of the Thunder organization, including a dedicated team of oncologists from OU and MD Anderson. “He has a tremendous group of oncologists… and they are extremely positive about his outlook in dealing with this situation,” Presti noted.

Historically, NBA players have faced similar battles. Former Denver Nuggets player Nene was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the 2007-08 season and successfully returned to play after missing just 76 days. Presti believes Topic has the resilience to overcome this challenge, stating, “He’s a really remarkable guy… extraordinarily mature, composed, resilient.”

In a reflective moment over the summer, Topic shared his thoughts on missing his rookie season. “It was hard… You learn something about yourself that you didn’t know you had,” he said. “I feel good now,” he added, indicating his determination to return to the court when ready.

As the Thunder rally around Topic during this critical time, fans and fellow players alike are showing their support. The situation remains fluid, and updates will follow as he begins his treatment journey.
