Pelicans Secure Fourth Consecutive Win Despite Williamson’s Injury

The New Orleans Pelicans triumphed over the Utah Jazz with a score of 115-105 on March 2, 2024, marking their fourth consecutive victory. This win was bittersweet as star player Zion Williamson left the game in the first half due to a right ankle injury, which raises concerns about his ongoing health.

Williamson exited during the second quarter after contributing four points, two assists, and one rebound in just 11 minutes of play. Pelicans interim coach James Borrego described the injury as a “tweaked” ankle, expressing hope that it would not be serious. Further assessments are anticipated in the coming days.

In Williamson’s absence, Saddiq Bey stepped up significantly, scoring 24 points. This performance followed an impressive 42-point game earlier in the week against the same Jazz team. Bey shot 7 for 16 from the field and was effective from the free-throw line, converting 7 of 10 attempts. Teammates Jeremiah Fears and Bryce McGowens contributed 18 points each, while Herbert Jones and Jordan Poole added 17 and 11 points, respectively.

The Pelicans dominated the first half, closing with a remarkable 15-0 run to lead 65-40 at halftime. They maintained a shooting accuracy of 50% in the first half compared to the Jazz’s 26.9%, who struggled with 14 for 52 shooting.

Despite the significant deficit, the Jazz attempted a comeback. Isaiah Collier led Utah with 21 points, while Keyonte George, returning after missing ten games due to ankle sprains, added 17 points. The Jazz managed to reduce the gap to seven points in the fourth quarter but could not overcome the Pelicans’ lead. New Orleans responded with an 8-0 run, ensuring they were never threatened again.

For the Pelicans, Trey Murphy III remained sidelined for a fifth consecutive game due to a right shoulder injury. The Jazz were also missing key players, including Jaren Jackson Jr., Walker Kessler, and Lauri Markkanen, which significantly impacted their performance.

New Orleans now looks ahead to sustaining their momentum as they prepare for future matchups, while the status of Williamson remains a critical concern for the team moving forward.
