UPDATE: Andrea “Andi” Cantor, a key figure at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, is making headlines today as she opens up about her personal journey that intertwines with her professional mission. The urgency of her story highlights the critical support systems within the Philadelphia Jewish community, especially during crises.
Just this past January, Cantor faced a harrowing situation when her sister, who had recently moved to Israel, fell gravely ill and required hospitalization. Cantor, in Philadelphia at the time, experienced sheer panic when her sister stopped contacting her. She recalls, “I remember I was making a presentation, and on the other hand, I was looking up hospitals in Israel.” With the help of colleagues and the Jewish Federation, she quickly arranged a flight to her sister’s bedside.
What followed was a whirlwind of emotions and support. Cantor’s sister was in critical condition, suffering from sepsis and placed on a ventilator. Cantor and her mother flew out the next day, assisted by the Federation’s network. “The love and support I felt from the Philly Jewish community at that time was beyond what I could ever imagine,” she said.
The story took a positive turn, with her sister recovering, but the experience deepened Cantor’s commitment to her work. She noted that the ambulance service, provided by Magen David Adom—an organization supported by emergency grants from the Federation—was a lifeline during this crisis.
Cantor’s experiences have re-energized her dedication to the Jewish Federation’s mission. “Seeing the beauty and diversity of Israel, the families of different backgrounds sitting in these hospital rooms … it breaks the barriers of misconceptions of the country and underscores the difference we are making in people’s lives through philanthropy,” she stated.
As co-president of Neshama Hadassah and a member of the Jewish Federations of North America’s Executive Accelerator program, Cantor brings a wealth of experience and personal insight to her role. She emphasizes the importance of fostering an inclusive environment for the Jewish community, noting that “there are so many different paths to cultivate Jewish identity.”
Her vision for the communications department focuses on radical creativity and inclusion, ensuring that all voices within the Jewish community are heard and valued. “Stories have the ability to remind us of our shared humanity and the power each of us has to make a difference,” she explained.
Cantor’s work is particularly crucial in times of crisis. Following the events of October 7, when urgent mobilization was required, she helped ensure that the Federation provided a centralized and trusted voice for the community. “We connect people with ways to help,” she added.
The impact of Cantor’s journey resonates deeply within the Philadelphia Jewish community, showcasing the strength and resilience that can arise from personal challenges. Her story is a reminder of the vital role community support plays in overcoming adversity.
As she continues to navigate her role at the Federation, Cantor remains devoted to enhancing connections and fostering a sense of belonging for all. Her inspiring journey is not just about personal trials but also about the collective strength of a community that stands together in times of need.
