UPDATE: A Portland man, John Paul Cupp, has been charged with making serious threats against law enforcement officers, escalating concerns about online extremism. Cupp, aged 45, faces federal charges after allegedly threatening to kill officers and harm their families during a series of disturbing online posts and confrontations.
Authorities report that on October 14, 2025, Cupp confronted officers outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in South Portland. Witnesses say he shouted violent threats, including intentions to sexually assault their wives and harm their children. This shocking behavior was documented in court filings.
The threats did not stop there. On November 3, 2025, Cupp posted a video online reiterating his violent claims against federal agents and their families. Just ten days later, on November 13, he shared additional aggressive posts targeting law enforcement officers.
Federal authorities describe Cupp as “a prolific producer of online content,” regularly spreading a mix of aggressive rhetoric, calls for war, and antisemitic threats. FBI Director Kash Patel stated, “If you threaten to kill law enforcement officers or harm their families, you will face the full weight of the federal government.” The FBI is treating this case as part of a broader initiative to combat rising extremist threats across the nation.
“Attempts to intimidate those sworn to protect the American people degrade efforts to keep all of us safe,” said Matt Torres, Acting FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge. “The FBI will use all investigative means available to seek out and arrest anyone using violent rhetoric.”
U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, Scott E. Bradford, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that threats against law enforcement “will not be tolerated.” He reaffirmed the commitment to prosecute those who intimidate public safety officials to the fullest extent of the law.
Cupp remains in federal custody as the case unfolds. Authorities have yet to announce a court date for his next appearance, but the implications of this case are significant. The FBI’s ongoing efforts to identify and neutralize violent extremists underscore the seriousness of the threats posed to public safety.
This urgent situation highlights the increasing danger of online rhetoric spilling into real-world violence. As Cupp’s case progresses, communities are urged to remain vigilant against any signs of similar threats.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities work to address these rising concerns.
