URGENT UPDATE: A growing number of runners are gearing up to run an incredible 62 miles across Humboldt County, connecting all five Murphy’s grocery stores on March 14. This unique challenge, dubbed the Murphy’s 100k, is not just a race; it’s also a vital fundraising effort for local businesses and residents impacted by the devastating fire on January 2.
Organized by local ultrarunner Pete Ciotti, the race will begin at the Murphy’s in Trinidad, leading participants along a scenic route that includes the breathtaking Clam Beach and the Hammond Coast Trail. Runners will finish at the Sunny Brae Murphy’s after passing through several key locations, including Arcata and Glendale.
Ciotti, who previously organized a successful cycling event last year, has inspired this footrace to support the community. “It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of local support during tough times. Aid stations will be set up at each Murphy’s location to ensure runners stay hydrated and energized.
The race has no formal registration fee, but participants are encouraged to donate to the relief efforts through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. In a collaborative effort, Murphy’s will also invite customers to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar in the week leading up to the race, contributing the total to those in need.
Since the announcement just yesterday, about 15 runners have already signed up, showcasing an enthusiastic response from the community. Some participants are even forming relay teams to tackle the distance together, highlighting the camaraderie among local runners.
“This event is about more than just running; it’s about community and resilience,” Ciotti added. He challenges everyone to check out local run clubs and support healthy, positive initiatives within the area.
With just weeks to go, the excitement builds for this extraordinary challenge. Runners and supporters alike are urged to stay tuned for updates and to consider joining in this impactful event. If you’re interested in participating, contact Pete Ciotti at [email protected].
