URGENT UPDATE: Sandfall Interactive’s CEO, Guillaume Broche, has confirmed that the studio’s highly successful title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, will not lead to a larger-scale game development, despite its recent acclaim. In an interview with Edge magazine, Broche emphasized the importance of creative limitations, stating, “It’s good to have limitations when you are creative.”
The announcement comes on the heels of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 winning an astonishing nine awards at The Game Awards 2025, marking a historic achievement for the indie studio. “It was completely unexpected from pretty much everybody,” Broche remarked, reflecting on the overwhelming response to the game’s narrative and cinematics.
Despite the financial success, Broche insists that expanding the scope of the next game is not tempting. “We could scale up now we have a lot more money, but we love making games more than we love managing,” he explained. This approach is rooted in a desire for the team to maintain their passion for game creation, with Broche stating, “These past five years were some of the best of my life, and I want to be happy like that again.”
Producer François Meurisse echoed this sentiment, revealing that managing expectations was key during production. “I kind of forbade myself from having too much hope,” he said, highlighting the challenges faced during development. Yet, the results far exceeded their wildest expectations, a testament to the game’s resonance with players.
The upcoming update for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises to enhance gameplay with new dungeons, boss battles, and a Photo Mode. This will re-engage late-game players and draw new ones into the somber world of Lumiere.
Looking ahead, Broche hinted that this installment is not the end for the series, stating, “Clair Obscur is the franchise name,” suggesting further adventures may be on the horizon.
With the gaming community buzzing about this news, fans can expect more from Sandfall Interactive, focusing on quality over quantity as they prepare for their next move.
