Sister Marionette Celebrates 104th Birthday with Joy and Scrabble

Born on November 17, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Sister Marionette grew up in a large Irish Catholic family as one of twelve children. She made the life-changing decision to join the convent at just 17 years old, a moment she recalls vividly.

“I came on the night train from Pittsburgh, by myself,” she reminisced. “The sisters got me a special card for clergy. And I wasn’t clergy.” Her life has spanned through 18 different U.S. Presidents, and she has witnessed significant historical events, including the fall of the Soviet Union.

Sister Marionette’s heartwarming stories reflect her deep connection with the community. She fondly remembers a student who once asked, “You never get sick, do you?” to which she replied, “No, so don’t plan on it.” Her dedication to education is evident; she never missed a day of school throughout her long career.
