Solano Turkey Trot Draws 2,800 Runners in Festive Thanksgiving Spirit

UPDATE: The annual Solano Turkey Trot has kicked off, bringing together approximately 2,800 participants at Solano College on November 23, 2023. This festive event, organized by Medic Ambulance and Fleet Feet Vacaville, combines serious competition with family fun, taking place just in time for Thanksgiving.

Runners, dressed in a variety of costumes from turkeys to Super Mario, filled the streets with energy and enthusiasm. Race organizer and Fleet Feet Vacaville owner Carol Gilpin expressed her joy, stating, “People always tell me ‘thank you’ for hosting this each year, but to me, it’s not work. I love doing it. It’s like throwing a big party on Thanksgiving.”

Among the participants was Joel Canalas, who traveled from San Jose wearing a Super Mario costume. He remarked, “It was fun having a lot of kids come up to me and ask for pictures. I feel some would see Yoshi and that would lift their spirits to run faster.”

The race featured both a 10K and a 5K, with families and runners of all ages participating. Young runners like Gianna South, only 7 years old, expressed awe over her first race and the medals awarded, highlighting the event’s family-friendly atmosphere.

The fastest runner of the day, Jordan Kurtz, completed the 10K in an impressive time of 31 minutes and 3 seconds, potentially setting a new course record. He shared, “It’s easy to do this race on Thanksgiving because Carol does such a great job organizing. I like running in the vineyards, and the weather is usually pretty good too.”

In addition to competitive runners, the event also included attendees who participated in costume contests. Dr. Chris Claus won the costume contest dressed as a hand turkey, emphasizing the event’s inclusive environment, “I love this event because it’s family-friendly and it brings out everyone—dogs, kids, everyone.”

As participants crossed the finish line, the joyous atmosphere was palpable. Runners praised the scenic course and the community spirit, making this Thanksgiving tradition one to remember.

The Solano Turkey Trot is not just a race; it’s a celebration of community, spirit, and the festive season ahead. With the successful turnout, organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event, promising even more fun and excitement.
