Soquel’s Rafael Suarez-Abraham Named SCCAL MVP in Water Polo

BREAKING: Soquel High’s standout goalie, Rafael Suarez-Abraham, has just been named the 2025 SCCAL MVP in boys water polo, a rare honor for a goalkeeper in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. This achievement underscores his exceptional talent, as he helped lead the Knights to a league title and a spot in the prestigious CCS Open Division playoffs.

In a season marked by outstanding performances, the 6-foot-4 junior averaged an impressive 8.5 saves per match over the course of 28 games, totaling 238 saves and maintaining a goals-against average of just 8.5. His impact on the field was undeniable, particularly in crucial matches against top teams like Sacred Heart Prep and Campolindo, where he executed critical saves, including two penalty shots against Sacred Heart.

Knights coach Ryan Chapatte, who also received the title of SCCAL Coach of the Year, praised Suarez-Abraham’s abilities, stating, “He doesn’t sit back; he attacks. He blocks the shots he’s supposed to and he blocks a lot he shouldn’t.” His performance has struck fear in opponents, highlighting his rare skill set for a goalkeeper.

Suarez-Abraham’s contributions were instrumental in the Knights finishing the season with a record of 23-6 overall and an undefeated 4-0 in league play. His efforts propelled Soquel to the semifinals of the CCS Open Division and a qualification for the CIF Division I NorCal Regional playoffs.

Alongside his brother, Gabe Suarez-Abraham, who also earned first-team honors, the duo has been described as “water polo junkies” by their coach, having begun their journey in the sport at the tender age of 12. Both brothers demonstrated their prowess throughout the season, with Gabe contributing 50 goals, 57 assists, and leading the team with 78 steals.

The All-SCCAL first team also included senior utility player Stryder Stelck, who led the Knights with 81 goals and made significant plays throughout the season. The competition was fierce, with Santa Cruz also placing three players on the first team, including senior attacker Hayden Johnson, who led his team with 95 goals.

As the water polo season wraps up, all eyes are on the upcoming playoffs, where Suarez-Abraham’s skills will be tested against the best in the region. Fans and followers are eager to see if he can continue his remarkable form and help the Knights achieve greater success in the postseason.

This achievement not only highlights the exceptional talent within the SCCAL but also showcases the growing prominence of water polo in the region.
