UPDATE: A South Carolina woman, just months after giving birth, has made headlines with her incredible catch of a massive 12-foot, 597-pound alligator. Brittany Livingston, dubbed “Gator Girl,” and her husband, Matt, captured the enormous reptile during a thrilling hunt that has captivated locals and drawn attention across the state.
The couple’s remarkable feat unfolded in the early hours of September when they successfully shot the alligator just after 3:00 a.m. Their victory was met with astonishment, particularly when footage of the gator in their pickup truck circulated online, showcasing the sheer size of their catch.
“People were waving, giving thumbs up … even the workers at McDonald’s came outside to see it,” Brittany told Live 5 News, reflecting on the excitement generated during a drive-thru visit shortly after the catch.
For five years, Brittany, who is currently on maternity leave after welcoming her baby just five months ago, had applied for an alligator hunting tag through South Carolina’s rigorous lottery system. In 2025, her perseverance paid off when she was selected in Unit 4, which encompasses the Pee Dee region.
“This year, I finally had enough,” Brittany explained, noting the competition involved, with over 12,000 applicants vying for only 1,400 available tags. The lottery system, managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, aims to control alligator populations while allowing for regulated hunting.
Jay Butfiloski, former alligator program coordinator, emphasized the importance of this management. “The goal is not to eliminate alligators,” he stated, “It’s to allow some harvest, which helps manage the population and reduce nuisance issues.”
The Livingstons’ grueling battle with the alligator lasted for hours, culminating in a successful hunt that has left many in awe. The couple’s story resonates not only as a testament to their dedication but also highlights the unique cultural practices of alligator hunting in South Carolina.
As this story continues to develop, many are eager to see how the Livingstons’ adventure has sparked interest in wildlife management and hunting regulations across the state. The emotional engagement from the community reflects a shared excitement in a region where such monumental catches hold significant local pride.
