South Korea’s Online Interests Surge: AI, K-Culture on Top

UPDATE: New findings reveal that artificial intelligence, K-culture, and the concept of “authentic self” dominated online interests in South Korea throughout 2023. Released on December 31, 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism shared the results of its latest “2026 Sociocultural Trends” survey, highlighting a significant shift in digital engagement.

The survey indicates that online mentions of artificial intelligence surged by 44% compared to the previous year. Key terms surrounding this interest included security, policy, spread, and regulation, reflecting a growing public fascination with the convenience of AI, alongside concerns about jobs, safety, and fairness.

Interest in K-culture also surged, with mentions increasing by 31%. The ministry pointed to global hits like the animation “K-Pop Demon Hunters” as pivotal in this trend. Commonly associated topics included K-Pop, traditional hanbok, Korean cuisine, and prominent idols, showcasing the international appeal of South Korean culture.

Furthermore, discussions around the theme of “authentic self,” which encourages individuals to forge their own life paths, grew by 10% this year. The ministry noted that frequently used terms included individual, identity, choice, and self-determination, highlighting a societal shift toward personal empowerment.

The findings were derived from an extensive analysis of 538 million pieces of online data harvested from news outlets, social media platforms, online communities, and video sites from January through November 2023.

Lee Jeong-eun, director of digital communication at the ministry, emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging this analysis to better understand public demand and enhance effective communication strategies.

As South Korea navigates these emerging trends, the implications for culture, technology, and personal identity are profound, reflecting a society increasingly engaged with both global and digital landscapes. The ministry’s proactive approach indicates a keen awareness of the pressing need to adapt to these changes, positioning itself to address public concerns and aspirations in a rapidly evolving digital era.
