UPDATE: Residents of San Antonio’s Southeast Side are calling for an urgent increase in police presence after a chilling attempted break-in was captured on security cameras early Sunday morning. At approximately 2:15 a.m., Harrison and Savana Yount recorded a man prowling in their backyard and knocking on their back window.
Savana Yount described the frightening moment, stating, “I think one of the creepiest things was going back and looking at all of our ring cameras and seeing it all play out.” She quickly called the police, leading to the man’s detention shortly after the 911 call. “I didn’t want to confront him and spook him,” said Harrison Yount. “I wanted the police to be able to get here and get him.”
The incident has heightened fears among residents, especially as two other neighbors reported hearing gunshots in the area. “It’s pretty scary ‘cause you never know what people are intending to do,” remarked a concerned neighbor, Amber.
Residents have noted a decline in police patrols since the closure of Kate Schenck Elementary. “When the school was in session, we used to see police officers during the day, during the night,” one resident mentioned. The absence of regular police presence has left many feeling vulnerable in their own community.
Despite the unsettling atmosphere, residents like Savana Yount find solace in their strong community ties. “We know our neighbors, we love the neighborhood,” she expressed. “So this was a huge eye opener, kinda one of those just very unexpected things.”
Officials from the San Antonio Police Department confirmed that the individual involved in the break-in was experiencing a mental health crisis, but further details were not disclosed. The rising concern over crime in the Southeast Side highlights an urgent need for more policing and community engagement.
As law enforcement evaluates the situation, residents are left grappling with the implications of this crime spike. The community is now rallying for increased police visibility to ensure safety and peace of mind.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity as they await a response from authorities. This developing situation reflects a growing trend in neighborhoods facing rising crime rates, underscoring the critical need for immediate action.
