UPDATE: Prime Minister Hon Dr Terrance Drew of St. Kitts and Nevis has just announced an urgent call for the expansion of mental health professionals to combat rising crime and violence in the Federation. Speaking this morning, March 12, 2023, during the launch of the initiative “Building a Safe Space at Home,” he emphasized the critical need for increased access to psychologists and therapists as part of a national strategy.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come as alarming data reveals a direct link between untreated mental health issues and rising crime rates. “We cannot rely solely on law enforcement to address these deep-rooted social challenges,” he stated, highlighting the necessity for a more comprehensive societal approach to mental wellbeing.
In collaboration with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), the Ministry of Health, and LAKE Health and Wellbeing, the Mental Health Service System Enhancement Project (2024–2027) aims to raise awareness and promote supportive environments, particularly for young individuals facing significant mental health challenges. The initiative focuses on adolescents aged 15 to 19, a group identified as experiencing some of the highest levels of stress post-COVID-19.
During his address, Prime Minister Drew shared troubling statistics that have emerged since the pandemic, including spikes in domestic and gender-based violence. He underscored the importance of prioritizing mental health as a cornerstone of national development, stating, “We have shifted our focus from just citizen security to establishing a secretariat for human security and wellbeing.”
The Prime Minister further urged the community to embrace mental health support as a vital element of safety, asserting, “If you don’t address mental health, not even a bigger police force will solve these issues.” This perspective reflects a significant shift in the government’s strategy, which now prioritizes prevention, early intervention, and community engagement.
The project launch brought together students, parents, health professionals, and educators to discuss actionable strategies for fostering youth mental health. Prime Minister Drew’s commitment to strengthening mental health resources signals a pivotal moment in St. Kitts and Nevis’ approach to crime and societal wellbeing.
As this developing story unfolds, the Prime Minister’s call to action highlights the urgent need for societal change and increased mental health support for the Federation’s youth. With a focus on prevention and community involvement, St. Kitts and Nevis is taking critical steps toward a safer future.
Stay tuned as we provide further updates on this vital initiative and its impact on the community.
