UPDATE: Thousands are gathering today to honor the life of fallen Delaware State Police Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook, who tragically lost his life on December 23, 2022, while serving the community at a DMV in Minquadale. The emotional Celebration of Life services are taking place at the Bob Carpenter Center located at the University of Delaware, with a public viewing scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon.
The procession began early this morning, as law enforcement and first responders assembled at Christiana Mall before making their way to the university. Southbound lanes on I-95 experienced temporary closures at 6:30 a.m. to accommodate the procession, highlighting the community’s respect for Snook’s sacrifice.
Cpl. Snook was shot while working overtime, selflessly pushing an employee to safety before being struck again. His bravery and dedication to duty have touched countless lives. He leaves behind a loving wife and a one-year-old daughter, further emphasizing the deep personal loss felt across the community.
The Celebration of Life ceremony will commence at 1 p.m., featuring heartfelt tributes, followed by a 21-gun salute and a ceremonial flyover. The procession will then proceed to a private burial location.
Due to expected traffic disruptions from the tribute, all 13,000 students in the Christina School District will engage in virtual learning today, as authorities anticipate an influx of more than 3,000 additional cars in the vicinity of the university.
This tribute not only reflects the profound impact of Cpl. Snook’s sacrifice but also serves as a reminder of the risks first responders face daily. Officials urge the public to be respectful and mindful of the traffic changes throughout the day as the community comes together to pay their final respects.
