Tumbler Ridge Receives Global Support After Tragic Shooting

UPDATE: Tumbler Ridge is experiencing an outpouring of support from around the globe following a devastating mass shooting in the community. Local restaurant owner Wendy Trueit has mobilized her efforts to provide free meals to first responders and grieving families, with donations pouring in from as far away as the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Trueit, co-owner of Twisted Seasons Bistro, began offering complimentary meals to those affected. “We’ve had people from Connecticut, where they’ve faced similar tragedies, reaching out asking, ‘What can we do to help?’” she stated. “You can pre-pay for food for people, that would work.”

Since then, the restaurant has received thousands of dollars in donations, enabling Trueit to serve healthcare workers, paramedics, police officers, and firefighters, while also supporting families mourning their loved ones. “I never planned to have people send me money to help feed the people; I wasn’t concerned about that,” Trueit added, reflecting on the overwhelming support.

In a heartwarming gesture, Ted Ember from nearby Fort St. John made a two-hour drive to Tumbler Ridge to deliver flowers from coworkers and friends. “Next thing you know, there are strangers buying flowers too,” Ember shared. “We just thought it would be a nice gesture to show Tumbler Ridge that people care.”

GoFundMe campaigns for the victims have collectively raised over $1 million, showcasing the community’s resilience and the widespread compassion being extended.

Trueit confirmed she will continue to provide meals for as long as needed, including on the first day students and staff return to Tumbler Ridge Secondary. A school in Vancouver has also stepped in to cover meal costs, with support from Northern Health facilitating the logistics. “They said, ‘We can make that happen,’ so we just accepted that challenge,” she remarked.

Despite the sorrow, the kindness of strangers has illuminated the community during a dark time. “It definitely makes you look at the positive in the world,” Trueit concluded.

As Tumbler Ridge heals, the ongoing support from around the world serves as a reminder of unity in the face of adversity. Updates on the community’s recovery and continued fundraising efforts will follow as more details emerge.
