Umatilla County Election Heats Up with Limited Candidate Pool

UPDATE: With less than a month until the filing deadline on March 10, 2025, the race for Umatilla County commissioner is shaping up with a limited candidate pool. Currently, only three individuals have entered the race for two positions, raising concerns about voter choice ahead of the May 19 primary election.

Incumbents John Shafer and Celinda “Cindy” Timmons are both seeking reelection, while 24-year-old Eddy J. Antoniello has emerged as a challenger. If additional candidates do not file before the deadline, the election for these vital positions will shift to the general election in November.

Shafer, serving his second term, is running unopposed as of now and has expressed pride in his accomplishments, particularly in enhancing mental health services through Community Counseling Solutions. “We’ve seen a huge increase in services provided to the citizens of Umatilla County,” he stated. He aims to prioritize the return of detoxification services and ensure stable access to clean drinking water if reelected.

Timmons, a first-term commissioner, is also keen to continue her work after addressing critical issues like clearing 7 tons of garbage from the Walla Walla River and enhancing veterans services. “We’re moving forward with our homeless community day center,” she emphasized, highlighting her commitment to improving public services and senior housing facilities.

Antoniello, who moved to Umatilla County nine years ago, aims to address pressing concerns such as homelessness and rising living costs. “I enjoy helping people and I want to help the community,” he remarked. His focus on infrastructure improvement and road quality reflects a growing concern among residents.

As the candidate pool remains small, the primary election may only feature local ballot measures alongside federal and state nomination contests. Stephen Craigen from the Umatilla County Elections Department confirmed this development, emphasizing the need for Election Board workers for both the primary and general elections.

This election cycle is critical for Umatilla County, and voters are urged to stay informed. For those interested in the Election Board worker positions, details are available on the Umatilla County website.

Stay tuned for updates as the filing deadline approaches, and be sure to engage in the democratic process this May!
