Urgent: 30 Handguns Seized at Texas Border, Two Arrested

UPDATE: Authorities in Texas have seized 30 handguns allegedly destined for Mexico, leading to the arrest of two suspects. The weapons were discovered hidden in a spare tire during a routine inspection at the Anzalduas Port of Entry in Mission, Texas, on September 27, 2023.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed the seizure, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. as part of a multi-agency operation involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations. Among the seized firearms was a 5.7-caliber FN Herstal, known for its ability to pierce body armor, raising significant security concerns.

The suspects, identified as Luis Torres Mujica, 30, a resident of Guanajuato, Mexico, and Jesse Joe Camacho, 28, from McAllen, Texas, are now facing serious charges of theft of property and firearm smuggling, both classified as second-degree felonies.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of illegal arms trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border, particularly given that gun ownership is heavily restricted in Mexico. The firearms were reportedly headed to Guanajuato, a state often associated with violent crime linked to drug cartels.

DPS officials emphasized the importance of these operations in keeping dangerous weapons off the streets. “The discovery of these handguns highlights the ongoing efforts to combat firearm smuggling and protect communities on both sides of the border,” a spokesperson stated.

As authorities continue their investigation, further developments are expected. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
