UPDATE: Austin-Travis County is facing a surge in whooping cough cases, with over 130 confirmed cases this year, alarming health officials as the holiday season approaches. The rise in infections, particularly among school-aged children, poses a significant threat to community health during festive gatherings.
Health authorities are urgently calling on residents to ensure they are vaccinated against this highly contagious disease. Dr. Desmar Walkes, the Austin-Travis County Health Authority, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Infants and older adults are especially vulnerable and can become critically ill if they contract pertussis.”
As symptoms of whooping cough can escalate rapidly, Dr. Walkes urges parents to check their children’s vaccination status. “I urge all parents and caregivers to ensure their children are up to date on their vaccinations to help stop further spread,” she added.
Whooping cough, known for its debilitating cough that can produce a high-pitched “whoop,” spreads primarily through airborne droplets. Without prompt antibiotic treatment, individuals can remain contagious for up to 21 days.
Vaccination is critical in combating this outbreak. The DTaP vaccine is administered to children from 2 months to 6 years, while preteens and teens should receive a Tdap booster. Adults, especially those interacting with infants and vulnerable populations, are also encouraged to seek a Tdap booster.
Vaccines are readily available at pharmacies, healthcare providers, and through Austin Public Health’s Shots for Tots clinics.
Parents are advised to act quickly if their child has been exposed to pertussis and shows early symptoms like a runny nose or mild cough. Delaying medical advice can lead to severe symptoms, including intense coughing fits, vomiting, and significant breathing difficulties.
As we approach the holiday season, health experts stress the importance of vaccinations, hand hygiene, and self-isolation when ill. Staying vigilant can protect not just families but the entire community.
Authorities continue to monitor this developing situation closely. The Austin-Travis County health department will provide updates as more information becomes available. Share this urgent update to ensure everyone is informed and protected this holiday season.
