Urgent Rescue: Officers Save Man from Freezing Marina Waters

UPDATE: A man has been rescued from freezing waters at Spicer’s Marina in Noank, Connecticut, after falling in on Wednesday evening. The Groton Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call at 7:21 p.m., alerting authorities that the man was struggling in the frigid water.

As temperatures plunged below freezing, a friend of the victim reported that he was losing feeling in his limbs. The first officer on the scene located the man, who had been submerged for approximately 15 minutes and was being supported by his friend. The friend had managed to secure the man to the dock, keeping his head above water until help arrived.

Emergency responders faced challenging conditions. Officers requested additional units and worked swiftly to hold the man’s wrist, preventing him from submerging further. They cleared large chunks of ice from the area to facilitate the rescue.

After a determined effort, officers and the friend successfully pulled the man onto the dock. He was then transferred onto a rescue stretcher provided by fire personnel from the Noank Fire Department, who assisted at the scene.

The man was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, where he is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities report that the friend initially dropped the man off at the marina earlier in the evening, asking him to text once he was on his boat. When no message was received, the friend returned, discovering the victim struggling in the water.

Police confirmed that multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the Groton Long Point Police Department, Groton Long Point Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance, and Groton Ambulance.

This dramatic rescue highlights the risks posed by freezing temperatures and serves as a reminder for boaters to prioritize safety during winter months. As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone using the marina to remain vigilant and prepared for emergencies.
