UPDATE: Body of Flood Victim Found Near I-17
Authorities have confirmed the recovery of the body of a man who was swept away by floodwaters in the Agua Fria River near Interstate 17 and Table Mesa Road. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announced the discovery of 53-year-old Christopher Couch on Tuesday afternoon, approximately 1.25 miles downstream from where he was last seen on Sunday morning.
The urgent search began after deputies received a call reporting a vehicle swept away by rapidly rising waters in the New River area. Rescue teams, including lake patrol and aerial units, were deployed to locate Couch. A woman passenger was successfully rescued through a hoist operation, but attempts to find Couch were hindered by severe weather conditions.
MCSO’s search efforts were paused on Sunday due to hazardous conditions but resumed on Monday and Tuesday as conditions improved. In a poignant statement, officials stressed the dangers posed by moving water, saying,
“This incident is a powerful reminder of the danger of moving water—and the dedication of the men and women who respond when lives are on the line. ⚠️ Never attempt to cross flooded or flowing water. Stay aware. Stay safe.”
The tragic incident highlights the risks associated with heavy rainfall and flooding in the region. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to avoid areas prone to flooding.
As the community mourns this loss, the MCSO has reiterated the importance of safety measures during severe weather events. Further updates on precautions and safety tips will be shared as authorities continue to assess the situation.
