Urgent Update: Brown University Shooting Suspect Found Dead

UPDATE: The suspect in the tragic Brown University shooting last weekend has been confirmed dead. Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old former student and Portuguese national, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday evening at a storage facility in New Hampshire, according to Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez.

Authorities believe Valente is responsible for the horrific shooting that occurred in a lecture hall on September 30, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. Just two days later, he allegedly murdered Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a professor at MIT and former colleague, at Loureiro’s home.

Valente was enrolled at Brown University as a graduate student studying physics from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2001. In a statement, Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed, “He has no current affiliation with the university.” Further investigations revealed that both Valente and Loureiro had attended the same academic program at a university in Portugal between 1995 and 2000.

The violence has sent shockwaves through the Brown University community and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for discussions around campus safety and mental health resources. The police are continuing to investigate the motive behind these tragic events, and the community is left grieving the loss of young lives.

This is an urgent developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Authorities urge anyone with information related to the incidents to come forward.
