UPDATE: Starting December 1, 2025, a significant portion of the Virginia Capital Trail will be closed for urgent construction. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a multiweek closure to replace the bridge deck and substructure between mile markers 3 and 4 on the Jamestown leg of the trail.
This closure will impact trail users between John Tyler Highway from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. VDOT estimates the closure will last for two to three weeks, but the timeline is weather-dependent and may be subject to change.
As part of the upcoming repairs, crews will install new composite decking boards designed with enhanced texture to improve traction for both pedestrians and cyclists. This vital upgrade aims to bolster safety along the trail, which serves as a key connection between Jamestown and downtown Richmond.
The Virginia Capital Trail spans 52 miles, providing a scenic route for outdoor enthusiasts. Future developments, such as the planned Trail757 project, will further enhance connectivity between the Capital Trail and Colonial Williamsburg, making this area a prime destination for cyclists and walkers.
Trail users are urged to plan alternative routes during this closure, as the construction is essential for maintaining the integrity and safety of this popular recreational space.
Stay tuned for updates as VDOT will provide ongoing information about the progress of the repairs and any changes to the timeline. The community is encouraged to share this news to inform fellow trail users about the upcoming closure.
