Urgent Weather Alert: Cold Snap and Snow Expected in B.C. Now

UPDATE: A special weather statement has just been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for the Lower Mainland and much of B.C.’s south coast, warning residents to prepare for a significant drop in temperatures and light snowfall beginning today, February 5, 2024.

The cold weather front, moving in from the north, is expected to bring conditions that could last throughout the week. Meteorologist Carl Lam from 1130 NewsRadio advises that temperatures will remain well below the seasonal average of 9 degrees Celsius during the day and 2 degrees Celsius at night. Instead, residents can expect highs of only 4 to 5 degrees Celsius.

Snowfall is projected, particularly at higher elevations, with the potential for light snow even around Vancouver International Airport (YVR). “We’re certainly watching this closely as it is a fluid week,” Lam stated. While he does not anticipate a blizzard, he cautioned that sub-zero precipitation could lead to “slick and slippery” road conditions.

ECCC urges drivers to remain vigilant for rapidly changing travel conditions, including sudden reductions in visibility. Motorists should be prepared for potentially hazardous driving as conditions evolve.

With the cold snap expected to persist, the forecast for mid-week remains concerning. Lam noted that while conditions are atypical for February, residents should stay updated as the weather develops.
