Urgent: Woman in Custody After Series of Pit Bull Attacks

UPDATE: Philadelphia police have arrested a woman in connection with a series of alarming unprovoked pit bull attacks that left multiple dogs injured and their owners traumatized. The latest incident occurred on December 29, 2023, shortly after 5 p.m., in Center City at 12th and Chestnut Streets.

Witnesses report a shocking attack where a pit bull lunged at a 12-year-old miniature pinscher named Ziggy during a routine walk. Owner Brian Lovenduski described the terrifying moment: “Suddenly, I felt my dog’s leash pull backwards. A dog had come out from behind us and had his leg before we even realized what had happened.” Ziggy suffered severe injuries, including a broken jaw and the loss of a leg.

Police believe the same pit bull is responsible for two additional attacks on December 26 and December 31. A 53-year-old man was attacked on December 26 while walking his dog at Juniper and Chestnut Streets, and a 74-year-old man was targeted on December 31 at 19th and Walnut Streets.

Authorities confirmed that the woman in custody is linked to these incidents, but charges are still pending. “I just am concerned that there’s a potential danger on the street,” Lovenduski emphasized, urging others to remain vigilant.

As of now, the whereabouts of the pit bull remain unknown, and investigations are ongoing. The Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) Philly is actively searching for the dog and coordinating with police. Executive Director Sarah Barnett explained the complex legal procedures involved, stating, “Even if a dog is legally deemed dangerous, removal is not automatic. The law requires additional steps.”

Ziggy is scheduled for jaw surgery on Wednesday, December 31, and Lovenduski expressed gratitude for his survival despite the harrowing events. “I can’t believe it happened,” he said, still in shock from the brutal encounter.

With the safety of other dog walkers in the area at stake, authorities are urging anyone who sees the brown and white pit bull to contact police immediately. As investigations proceed, the community remains on high alert for any further incidents.
