Virginia Declares State of Emergency as Massive Winter Storm Approaches

UPDATE: A state of emergency has been declared in Virginia as residents prepare for a massive winter storm set to impact the region this weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain that could create hazardous conditions across Virginia and West Virginia from January 27 to January 29, 2023.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid all travel as the storm is expected to bring up to 12 inches of snow in Virginia and between 9 to 12 inches in West Virginia, along with dangerous gale-force winds. The NWS has issued a stark warning: “A significant, long-duration winter storm will bring widespread heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain… Widespread travel disruptions, prolonged power outages, and vast tree damage are likely,” it stated.

As conditions deteriorate, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has urged citizens to take the storm seriously. “Please, please listen to the requests that we are putting out. Please stay off the roads, particularly beginning Saturday night, all day Sunday, and into Monday,” she said in a press conference. Spanberger highlighted that the combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain could significantly delay road clearing efforts.

The storm’s impact will be felt beyond just snowfall, with freezing rain expected to create ice accumulations of around a quarter inch in parts of the Piedmont region. The NWS cautioned that this ice will coat any snow or sleet that has fallen, making travel conditions extremely treacherous.

Forecasts predict dangerously cold wind chills and near record-breaking temperatures Friday night through early next week, adding to the severity of the situation. Virginia officials stress that the prolonged cold may exacerbate the storm’s effects, making response and recovery efforts more challenging.

Residents are advised to stock up on essential supplies and prepare for possible power outages. As the storm approaches, stay tuned for further updates from local authorities and the NWS.

WHAT’S NEXT: As the winter storm unfolds, residents should monitor local updates and adhere to travel advisories. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents caused by the severe weather conditions.

Stay safe, Virginia!
