URGENT UPDATE: The WAVE Project in Warren, Michigan, is urgently seeking $68,000 in donations to continue its vital services for the homeless this winter. The nonprofit organization, dedicated to helping those in need since 2018, operates an overnight winter shelter that serves hundreds each night in metro Detroit.
Todd Gordon, co-founder and executive director of WAVE Project, emphasized the immediate need for funds, stating, “There are literally hundreds of people in our communities, not just Wayne County but Macomb County and Oakland County, experiencing some form of homelessness.” He noted that on many nights, the shelter sees a line forming at its door by 6 p.m.
Last winter alone, WAVE Project provided over 6,300 stays at its shelter, offering not just a roof but also hot meals and companionship to those who often feel isolated. Sheila Chauvin, project manager for the Macomb County Winter Shelter, highlighted the emotional support the shelter provides, saying, “What they need is somebody to give them a hug, to sit down and have dinner with them.”
However, with some partners unable to contribute this year, the shelter faces a critical funding gap. “We’re going to be very heartbroken if we can’t be open, along with all the people that need us,” Chauvin added. The goal is to keep the shelter operational for 12 weeks, starting at the end of December, with services available seven days a week.
To sustain operations, the organization requires a minimum of $41,000 to operate for just one month. Gordon explained, “Our budget consists of having security on site to make sure volunteers, staff members, and guests are safe. People wouldn’t believe what it actually costs to keep this place warm.”
Every donation, regardless of size, can make a significant impact. “Whether it’s $10 or thousands, every penny counts toward keeping the shelter operational,” Chauvin said.
In addition to shelter, WAVE Project also provides mobile showers and distributes clothing to those in dire need. The community’s support is crucial to ensuring that those experiencing homelessness have a safe place to go during the harsh winter months.
