Windjammers Claim Historic State Football Championship in 52-26 Victory

UPDATE: In a thrilling clash that will go down in history, the Camden Hills Windjammers secured their first-ever state football championship with a commanding 52-26 victory over the Spruce Mountain Phoenix on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School.

Camden Hills quarterback Hollis Schwalm delivered a spectacular performance, scoring three rushing touchdowns while throwing for another, leading his team to a decisive win. The senior’s drive was fueled by a new motivational banner unveiled at the school just days before the game, inspiring the team to put their names on it.

“They actually just put up new banners in our gym this week… so I looked around and said ‘That needs to change,’” Schwalm said. And change it did, as the Windjammers dominated throughout the game.

With a combination of offensive prowess and defensive tenacity that saw them force five turnovers, Camden Hills took control early, leading 32-12 at halftime. The Windjammers finished the season with an impressive 10-1 record, while the Phoenix closed out at 8-2.

Head coach Chris Christie praised his team’s heart and determination: “We played with utter heart, grit, and determination today.” Players like Braden Beveridge, who scored a touchdown and intercepted two passes, expressed the dream-like quality of the victory: “This is the stuff you dream about since you’re six years old.”

Schwalm’s contributions were nothing short of extraordinary. He accounted for 32 of the team’s points, showcasing his dual-threat ability that left the Spruce Mountain defense scrambling. His adaptability and communication with Coach Christie were key to their success, as Christie noted, “As long as I get the ball in his hands, something good is going to happen.”

The Windjammers struck first with a 95-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Justin Batty, establishing momentum that they would not relinquish. Despite a spirited effort from Spruce Mountain, which included a kickoff return for a touchdown, Camden Hills maintained control throughout the game, extending their lead to 46-20 by the end of the third quarter.

With the victory, Camden Hills not only made history but also solidified their place in the community, as players look forward to a bright future for the program. Coach Christie remarked on the team’s growth, noting, “We checked our egos and really just started playing together as a team.”

The Windjammers outscored their opponents 292-154 during the regular season and 134-26 in the playoffs, demonstrating their dominance. They overcame significant challenges, including a program that faced player safety concerns and a canceled season in 2015.

This state championship is a testament to the resilience and hard work of Camden Hills football, which has only been a full-fledged varsity program since 2009. With this victory, they can now proudly display the championship banner that had been absent for so long.

As the season concludes, the Windjammers have not only made their mark in history but have also ignited excitement for the future of Camden Hills football. Players and coaches alike are eager to build on this success in the years to come.
