URGENT UPDATE: A new boba tea hotspot is set to open in Redwood City, as Drew Shih, a devoted father of four, brings Kung Fu Tea to the area. The soft opening is scheduled for October 27, with a grand opening planned for November 15 at 593 D Woodside Road.
Frustrated by the daily trek for boba to San Mateo and beyond, Shih decided it was time for a local solution to satisfy his daughters’ diverse tastes. Ranging in age from 11 to 19, each of his daughters has unique boba preferences, prompting the family to explore options for authentic Taiwanese tea closer to home.
Shih, who has lived in both Korea and Taiwan, became determined to fill the gap in the local market. “It became sort of an obsession,” he explained. After extensive research into various boba franchises, they chose Kung Fu Tea for its extensive menu of nearly 70 drinks, including innovative options like honey oolong milk tea and lychee punch.
The family has been deeply involved in developing the menu, with Shih’s daughters taste-testing and vetting each drink. The older siblings are also set to join the team, ensuring that the shop has a family-run feel. Customers can anticipate a variety of flavors, from slushies like taro and apple pie to refreshing fruit drinks.
Currently, there is only one other Kung Fu Tea location nearby, situated in San Jose, following the closure of a Palo Alto outlet. This new establishment aims to cater to both boba enthusiasts and newcomers alike, making authentic Taiwanese drinks more accessible to the community.
Residents are encouraged to follow their journey on Instagram at @kft_woodsideroad for updates as the opening date approaches. With the growing popularity of boba tea across the nation, this local launch is expected to make waves in Redwood City.
As the date draws closer, fans of boba tea can look forward to indulging in a wide array of beverages without the long drive. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!
