UPDATE: A nursing home worker in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, has been charged with stealing from an elderly resident, raising alarms about the safety of vulnerable individuals in care facilities. Authorities confirm that Charlene Eady, 55, faces serious charges, including theft and unauthorized use of an access device, following a disturbing investigation at Providence Rehabilitation Center.
The Yeadon Police Department received a report on October 20, 2023, about a missing debit card belonging to a resident. Police Chief Henry Giammarco Jr. stated that the elderly victim, who relies on the nursing home staff for daily care, discovered that her debit card and other financial items had gone missing, with unauthorized transactions occurring soon after.
Detective Leah Cesanek led a comprehensive investigation that included executing multiple search warrants. The findings revealed that Eady had allegedly used the victim’s debit card multiple times across various locations in Chester. “This type of crime is deeply disturbing,” Giammarco remarked, emphasizing the breach of trust involved in this case.
The emotional impact on the victim is significant, as she depends on caregivers for protection and dignity. Giammarco called on the community to uphold the safety and well-being of elderly residents, stating, “The defendant, a healthcare worker entrusted with the care of vulnerable individuals, violated not only the ethical standards of her profession but also fundamental moral principles.”
Eady has been arraigned before District Judge Keith Williams II and is currently held on 10 percent of $5,000 bail, which she has been unable to post. She is now awaiting a preliminary hearing set for December 9, 2023. Giammarco reiterated that Eady is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and the investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges arising from further findings.
Residents and families of those in care facilities are urged to remain vigilant as the investigation unfolds. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding our elderly population and ensuring that those entrusted with their care uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
