URGENT UPDATE: A young teen has allegedly stolen an SUV with four children inside in Philadelphia, leading to a chaotic scene that unfolded late Thursday night. Authorities report that the incident began at approximately 11 p.m. when the children’s mother entered King Laundromat on the 6700 block of Castor Avenue, leaving her Honda CR-V running with the kids in the back seat.
Police say the suspect, described as a male aged 13 to 14, took advantage of the situation, viewing the running vehicle as a prime opportunity for theft.
“This appears to be a crime of opportunity,”
stated Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department. The suspect quickly drove off but crashed the vehicle just half a mile south on Castor Avenue, side-swiping a parked van as he attempted to turn onto Comly Street.
Witnesses reported seeing the crash and the young suspect fleeing on foot after realizing the children were still in the vehicle. Fortunately, the children were unharmed and have since been reunited with their mother. Authorities are actively searching for the suspect, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
“It only takes a split second for something like this to happen,” Chief Inspector Small added, highlighting the potential dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a short time.
As police continue their investigation, community members are urged to come forward with any information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. This alarming incident underscores the need for vigilance among parents and guardians, particularly in busy urban areas.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities work to bring the young suspect to justice.
