Austrian filmmaker Adrian Goiginger presents his latest feature, Four Minus Three (or Vier Minus Drei), which will have its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, 2024. This deeply emotional film delves into themes of family, death, grief, and hope, all intertwined with an unexpected element—clowns.
The narrative follows Barbara, portrayed by Valerie Pachner, who, alongside her partner Heli, played by Robert Stadlober, leads a life filled with joy and laughter as professional clowns raising their two children. However, tragedy strikes when Barbara loses both Heli and their children in a devastating car accident. The film explores the impact of this unspeakable loss on her life.
According to the film’s synopsis, “In the face of unspeakable loss, her belief in humor, hope, and humanity is put to the ultimate test. Can her way of seeing the world—through both its light and shadow—help her find a way back to life? She bets she’ll laugh again.” The cast also features Stefanie Reinsperger, Hanno Koffler, and Ronald Zehrfeld, all contributing to the film’s poignant exploration of resilience.
The screenplay, written by Senad Halilbašić, is based on the bestselling novel by Barbara Pachl-Eberhart. The film is produced by 2010 Entertainment in Austria and Giganten Film in Germany, with Goiginger serving as both director and producer alongside Peter Wildling, Gerrit Klein, Martin Pfeil, and David Stöllinger.
Reflecting on the genesis of the project, Goiginger noted in a director’s statement, “I first read the synopsis of Four Minus Three at a time when my second child had just been born. My initial reaction was that the story of a woman who loses her husband and children in one fell swoop was too intense for me. It was only through Halilbasic’s first draft of the screenplay and his perspective on the story that I realized it was more about hope and life after the accident than about telling a tragedy.” This realization ignited his passion to bring the story to the screen.
The filming process proved to be an emotional journey for the entire cast and crew. Goiginger praised Pachner’s commitment to her role, stating, “I’ve rarely seen anyone commit to a role the way Valerie Pachner does: 100 percent emotionally invested in every take, regardless of the consequences.” He also highlighted Stadlober’s contribution, noting his ability to infuse personality and humor into his character, enriching the film’s narrative.
Distribution deals have been secured for the film, with Alamode Film handling the German release and Polyfilm managing distribution in Austria. As anticipation builds for the premiere, an exclusive clip from Four Minus Three showcases Pachner’s character reflecting on cherished moments with her loved ones, offering a glimpse into the film’s emotional depth.
As audiences prepare for the screening at the Berlin International Film Festival, Four Minus Three promises to take viewers on a compelling journey through loss and the enduring power of hope.
