Bengals Aim for Shemar Stewart’s Return, Tee Higgins Faces Concerns

The Cincinnati Bengals are optimistic about the potential return of rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart this week while facing uncertainty regarding wide receiver Tee Higgins. Stewart participated in practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a knee injury on November 2, 2023, during a game against the Chicago Bears. The team hopes to activate him from injured reserve for their upcoming match against the Baltimore Ravens.

Stewart, who has missed the last four games and a total of eight this season, was listed as a full participant in practice. He expressed confidence about returning to play on Sunday, noting, “Playing four games in a row is going to be a big, big confidence booster.” He highlighted the challenges he faced, stating, “I never missed a game in college. I never missed a practice in college. Coming in here and missing 10 weeks is just hard on the mental.”

In contrast, Higgins is navigating the complexities of the concussion protocol following his second concussion in three games. He suffered a concussion during the Bengals’ loss to the New England Patriots on November 23, 2023, after hitting his head on the turf. Although he returned to play against the Buffalo Bills, he sustained another head injury during that game, leading to his removal for further evaluation.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association issued a joint statement regarding Higgins’ situation, emphasizing that he was evaluated twice during the game and cleared each time. Following the match, he reported experiencing symptoms, which prompted his placement back into the concussion protocol. The next steps for Higgins involve a full, non-contact practice, and he will need clearance from an independent neurologist to participate in Sunday’s game.

As the Bengals prepare for a pivotal game against the Ravens, they are acutely aware of the playoff implications. A loss could eliminate the Bengals from postseason contention, particularly if the Pittsburgh Steelers secure a win against the Miami Dolphins. Despite their slim chances of making the playoffs, the Bengals are eager to reintegrate Stewart into the lineup to maximize his experience and development, especially with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson sidelined for the season.

Coach Zac Taylor acknowledged Stewart’s hard work and the high expectations placed on him, despite the setbacks caused by injuries. “We’ve got high expectations for him, and he’s worked really hard to meet those,” said Taylor. “Unfortunately, he had the setback with the injury. It’s nothing he can control.”

Taylor further noted that there is no pressure to rush Stewart back into form. “We’ll see how he feels as practice goes this week. If he’s able to get in a game this week, just keep progressing him, keep improving. That’s the biggest thing.”

As the Bengals approach this crucial week, their focus remains on securing the return of key players while navigating the challenges presented by injuries.
