A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in Arpora, Goa, resulted in the deaths of at least 25 individuals, including several tourists, according to state officials. The incident occurred just after midnight on December 3, 2023, in North Goa, a region well-known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist attractions.
Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, confirmed that the fatalities primarily included kitchen staff and three to four foreign tourists. Six other individuals suffered injuries but are currently in stable condition. The fire has reportedly been extinguished, and all bodies have been recovered.
The blaze was triggered by a gas cylinder explosion, as detailed by the Press Trust of India, which cited local police sources. At the time of the incident, it is estimated that approximately 100 patrons were present on the dance floor. In the ensuing chaos, many fled to the kitchen area below, where they became trapped alongside club employees.
Challenges in Emergency Response
Local reports indicated that the nightclub’s narrow entry and exit points hampered firefighting efforts. Fire brigades were forced to park their tankers about 400 meters away, delaying their response to the emergency. The club, located near the scenic Arpora river backwaters, has faced scrutiny regarding its safety compliance.
Roshan Redkar, a local village council official, revealed that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the nightclub due to the absence of a valid construction permit. However, higher officials later reversed this order, raising concerns about regulatory enforcement in the region.
In response to the tragedy, Pramod Sawant announced that an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the precise cause of the fire and whether fire safety norms and building regulations were adhered to.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences through a social media post, describing the incident as deeply saddening. He noted that the state government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.
