Ontario Christian Boys Soccer Team Falls to Taft in Overtime Thriller

ONTARIO — The Ontario Christian boys soccer team experienced a heart-wrenching defeat on March 5, 2024, losing to Taft in the CIF State Division V Southern California regional semifinal. After taking a second-half lead, the Knights surrendered it late in regulation, allowing Taft to equalize in the dying moments and ultimately clinch a 2-1 victory in overtime.

This match marked the end of an impressive season for Ontario Christian, who finished with a record of 23-6-1. The team had already made history by winning a state playoff game for the first time in several years, but this loss stung deeply as they let a pivotal opportunity slip away.

The Knights started the match strongly, demonstrating resilience after a scoreless first half. In the 58th minute, sophomore Benjamin Luistro netted the opening goal, assisted by teammate Dominik Martinez. With their 1-0 lead, Ontario Christian appeared poised to advance.

Yet, the Knights faced a familiar challenge as the match progressed. Despite their efforts to maintain control, Taft struck back late. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Taft junior Lalo Lopez-Gonzalez found the back of the net, sneaking a shot past goalkeeper Andrew Belden to equalize just before the final whistle.

Knights co-captain Jake De Corte, the team’s lone senior starter, reflected on the moment with disappointment. “I think it was just a mental lapse,” he said. “We got ahead of ourselves, thinking about the next game when the game wasn’t there yet.”

As regulation ended, both teams headed into overtime, with Taft seizing the momentum. Just a minute into the extra period, Lopez-Gonzalez struck again, this time heading in a long ball for the game-winning goal. The Knights were left to ponder what could have been.

Ontario Christian coach Anthony Quintanilla expressed pride in his team’s accomplishments throughout the season. “I really want them to take away, appreciating what they’ve done,” he said. “There’s an argument that this is one of the greatest teams Ontario Christian has had. I want them to know that and remember how hard it was to get here.”

With only one starter graduating, the team has a promising future ahead. They made substantial strides this season, breaking a streak of early playoff exits.

As Taft advances to face No. 3 Garfield for the regional title, Ontario Christian will reflect on a season filled with growth, resilience, and the hope of future success.
