Greenville Mourns Loss of Educator “Tom” Wickersham at 77

BREAKING: Greenville is grieving the loss of beloved educator and community figure, Tom Hilbert Wickersham, who passed away on February 19, 2026, at the age of 77. Known for his dedication to teaching and community involvement, Tom’s legacy will impact many for years to come.

Tom, a native of Vandalia, was born on August 26, 1948. He was an accomplished athlete at Vandalia High School, excelling in wrestling, tennis, and football before graduating in 1966. Just days after earning his Bachelor of Science in Education from Greenville University, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia “Pat” Louise Young, on May 30, 1970.

Together, Tom and Pat raised two children, David and Elizabeth, and played pivotal roles in their community. Tom’s passion for education led him to study theology at Asbury Theological Seminary and dedicate his career to teaching U.S. history in Christian schools. His influence shaped countless lives, making him a cherished figure among students and parents alike.

In retirement, Tom brought joy to children as one of Santa’s helpers for 16 years, working alongside Pat as Mrs. Claus to spread holiday cheer and raise money for charitable causes. His most treasured role began in 2009 when he became “Baba” to his grandson, Zachary Thomas Ginn. Inspired by Zach, Tom achieved a black belt in Taekwondo at the age of 73, exemplifying his belief in lifelong learning.

Tom is survived by his wife, Pat; children David and Elizabeth (married to Jeremy); grandson Zach; and brother James “Jim” Wickersham of Greenville, Illinois.

Funeral services will take place at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton on February 27, 2026. Memorial contributions can be made to Mr. Tom’s Scholarship Fund at Tri-City Martial Arts via Cashapp: $TWickershamSchlFd, or to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of South Texas at https://casasouthtx.org/donate/.

The community remembers Tom not just for his accomplishments, but for his unwavering support and love for those around him. His spirit will continue to inspire future generations.
