Iowa Women’s Wrestling Set for Historic NCAA Championships in Coralville

URGENT UPDATE: The inaugural NCAA National Championships for women’s wrestling are set to kick off in Coralville, IA, on March 6-7. With a remarkable 14-1 dual record this season, the Iowa Hawkeyes are poised to make history as they compete among 180 student-athletes from across 52 programs for the national title.

This groundbreaking event will take place at the Xtream Arena, a venue that has become a focal point for the development of women’s wrestling. During a press conference held earlier today, key figures including Luke Eustice, Director of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, expressed their excitement. “We are pleased, we’re proud, all those adjectives, to host this tournament. We think we’ll do a really good job,” Eustice stated.

The atmosphere is electric as Iowa’s athletes prepare for this pivotal moment. Among them is Kylie Welker, a standout redshirt junior who dominated at the Regional Qualifiers, securing her spot in Coralville. Welker, currently undefeated at 17-0 and seeded first in the 180-pound category, is ready to face Genevieve An of Lehigh on Friday. “I think it’s really special,” Welker remarked, emphasizing the significance of this historic event in women’s sports.

Head coach Clarissa Chun, who has been at the helm since November 2021, is focused on ensuring her athletes experience the thrill of competition. “I just really want our women to go out there, enjoy these moments, have fun, and be true to who they are,” Chun said, highlighting the importance of individual expression in their wrestling styles.

The championships will commence at 10 a.m.
