Winter Haven High School’s girls basketball team staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Riverview Sarasota 68-59 in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 7A regional semifinals on March 15, 2024. Despite being down 30-19 at halftime, the Lady Blue Devils rallied in the second half, propelled by strong performances and an unexpected motivational speech from their injured leader, Serenity Hardy.
Hardy, who has been sidelined with a torn Achilles since the end of the regular season, surprised her teammates by entering the locker room on crutches to deliver an impassioned speech. This marked her first appearance with the team since her injury, and her words resonated deeply. As Johnnie Lawson, head coach of the Lady Blue Devils, noted, “(They battled) adversity and they just continued to fight.” The emotional boost ignited a powerful second-half performance that saw Winter Haven outscore Riverview Sarasota 49-29.
Junior guard Alyse Mercredi led the charge, scoring an impressive 30 points, along with seven rebounds and four assists. Victoria Hall, also a junior, contributed significantly with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks. As the game progressed, the Lady Blue Devils tightened their defense, limiting Sarasota’s scoring opportunities and implementing a zone press that disrupted their opponents’ rhythm.
Sarasota’s senior guard Gabriela Morales initially posed a challenge, scoring 10 points in the first half. However, in the second half, her impact diminished as the Lady Blue Devils adjusted their defensive strategy. “I feel very relieved. It was a crazy game,” said Hall, reflecting on the team’s resilience. “We were able to stick together instead of breaking apart. (We’re) just doing this for our teammates that are not here.”
With Hardy and senior guard Quin Sanders absent, Winter Haven had to elevate their offensive play. The team executed fake passes and made smarter cuts, leading to better shot selection. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 50-45, setting the stage for a thrilling final period.
A key moment came when Hall scored a layup and converted an and-one opportunity, giving Winter Haven their first lead of the game at 56-55 with just over three minutes remaining. The crowd erupted as momentum shifted decisively in favor of the Lady Blue Devils. Mercredi continued to shine, scoring 10 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter, demonstrating her ability to perform under pressure.
Mercredi acknowledged her initial struggles in the first half, stating, “In the second half, I really settled down. I addressed the halftime situation and realized I needed to let the game come to me.” Her performance was reminiscent of what Sanders might have contributed had she not been suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. Lawson expressed the importance of discipline, stating, “We suspended her for this game. But we thought it had to be done. She made a mistake. She knows the mistake. We’re going to love on her.”
Looking ahead, Winter Haven, now with an 18-6 record, prepares to face Sumner in the regional finals next Friday. Earlier in the season, Winter Haven had bested Sumner 75-39 when Hardy was healthy. The Lady Blue Devils are poised for a challenging rematch as they seek to defend their state championship title.
In broader news from the regional semifinals, both Haines City and Lakeland were eliminated from the tournament, highlighting Winter Haven’s significant victory in a tense and competitive environment.
