Dominican Singer Amarilis Brito Arrested Over Anthem Performance

Police in the Dominican Republic have arrested 64-year-old singer Amarilis Brito Rodríguez after her spirited rendition of the national anthem went viral on social media. The performance, which featured a high-tempo dembow rhythm during a karaoke session at a restaurant named Mofongo & Variedades Eddy, has drawn both attention and controversy.

On Tuesday, authorities issued a police report accusing Brito of disrespecting the national anthem by presenting it in an urban musical style. A video of the event, which surfaced earlier this month, shows her energetically singing while holding the microphone in one hand and raising the other to emphasize the lyrics. Customers at the restaurant joined in, creating a lively atmosphere.

Days after the performance, police located Brito at her home in the municipality of San Víctor and arrested her on Monday. As she was led into a government building, she expressed her remorse, stating, “Sorry, sorry,” while smiling at reporters. Brito explained that she had originally written her version of the anthem 22 years ago, asserting that there was no law against such interpretations at that time.

According to authorities, Brito violated Article 37 of Law 210-19, which governs national symbols in the Dominican Republic. This law prohibits altering the anthem’s lyrics or musical tempo, performing it in a danceable manner, or singing it at memorial services for individuals lacking specific credentials. If convicted, Brito faces potential prison time and fines.

Brito maintained that she was unaware of any wrongdoing. “I used the anthem’s verses to express my free spirit,” she stated. Despite the legal implications, she expressed no regrets, emphasizing her belief that her rendition did not cause harm. When questioned about issuing an apology to the nation, she humorously remarked, “Forgive me, my country, forgive me in every way I need to ask. Now, it’s much easier to ask for forgiveness than it was to ask for permission.”

The incident has sparked intense debate online, with many users criticizing Brito for what they believe is a lack of respect for the anthem. Conversely, others have directed their ire toward law enforcement, arguing that the authorities should focus on more pressing social issues, such as violent crime and corruption, rather than targeting cultural expressions.

As this situation unfolds, it highlights the complex relationship between artistic expression and national pride in the Dominican Republic, raising questions about the limits of creativity in the realm of national symbols.
